STAR BIKE SHOP Est.1972

Star Bike was the very first bike shop I worked at. I remember it well, my first day of labor drenched in southern humidity. September 11, 2006. It was there that I learned how to overhaul one piece bottom bracket on beat up beach cruisers from Tybee Island, true wheels, assemble bikes, wrap handlebar tape and the list goes on... Owners Kip Larcom & Joey Green took me in and taught me a lot. I am forever thankful for the opportunity they gave me.

Star bike shop helped me build my skills and pursue a professional career path of bicycle mechanics.
If you find yourself in Savannah, Georgia. Stop by the shop, it's located on the Southside.
Grab an ice cold beverage from their 1940's old school Coca-Cola machine (Loaded with Beer!!!)
While sipping you can check out their bicycle museum which includes a Big Wheeler from the 1920s. Best of all Luke the shop dog will give you the tour.

MAVIC
*SHIMANO
CANE CREEK

I made a list of events I wanted to participate in this year. I choose to attend the Park Tool tech summit in Portland because I had a fellow mechanic recommend the experience. Abi booked me round trip tickets for my birthday and found friends for me to stay with. The registration fee was $200 bucks and I jumped on it right away. That was that, I was packing up to go to the bicycle conscious capital.
I was also excited to visit the Chris King factory and VeloCult bike shop.

Daily Schedule

Breakfast / Registration (8am-9am)
Class #1 (9am-11:30am)
Lunch (11:30am-12:30pm)
Class #2 (12:30pm-3:00pm)
Break (3:00pm-3:20pm)
Class #3 (3:20pm-5:50)
Expo / Reception (6:30pm-8:00)

The summit took place at the Sheraton near the Portland International Airport.
Three classes in two days. I'm definitely a fast learner when I'm tought hands on.
I'm also the type to take lots of notes because I enjoy writing. I literally took down every note and suggestions. Each class was very interesting and informative.

Instructor Daniel Large gave us a brief history of CAMPAGNOLO, which was amazing.
The invention of the cork screw and the first skewer Campagnolo has done a lot for the sport.
The class was about the Electric Power Shift / EPS and the obstacles a mechanic may face when trying to make other products compatible with Campy. It was great to learn from a professional the proper installation and adjustments. All my questions were answered and I highly recommend mechanics to attend this event.

Calvin Jones, Park Tool Director of Education was the instructor. I was really happy to have Calvin teach the class. He has written and published books on bicycle repair. As you can see we went through lots of hands on training such as gluing tubular tires, tubular tire adhesion, wheel theory, wheel truing, rim tension recommendations and how to make a graphic tension chart using the tension conversion calculator. Very very useful techniques!

I was looking forward to the Shimano class, I heard lots of good things. I wanted details and explanations. The new Dura-Ace 9000 11 speed group set had just came out and I had only worked on a few. We learned how to install Di2 and mechanical shifters, bottom bracket, crank set, Derailleurs, cassettes, chain pins, cable / housing, removing / mounting skid plates, adjustments and torque specifications.

Tour Of The GILA, 2013.

Silver City , New Mexico
Tour of the GILA powered by SRAM
 May 1st - 5th, 2013.
UCI America Tour / NRC National Racing Calendar.

*

GILA was my first tour ever with a professional cycling team. I had joined Optum Pro Cycling in April and was asked to work GILA as the men's team mechanic. A few weeks before the tour I had possession of the team car. I took off at noon from Los Angeles to Silver City, NM. 700 miles in one day. It felt a lot like Rat Race (the movie). Literally, that was my only reference to Silver City.
The excitement of working with a pro team was enormous. It really was a dream come true for me.

Arizona Black Top

I reached Silver City at midnight and meet Bob Gregorio a.k.a Bicycle Bob. Optum's senior mechanic. The following day we began tuning the race bikes, TT bikes, spare bikes, gluing a dozen or more tubular tires, swapping cassettes, washing wheel sets, vehicles and trailer.
A lot goes into making these festivals happen and the behind the scenes people are rarely talked about. The soigneurs are preparing bottles for the riders and bags for the feed zones. The directors are planning their strategies and analyzing each stage prologue. The riders are physically and mentally preparing themselves to race for a podium number in a world renowned race.
It's all a Big Deal! and only possible if everyone is pulling together.

The operations of repair and maintenance are repetitive so, that it can be a natural flow.
It's figuring out the most efficient system and thorough technique to maintenance, repair and clean.
We strip the bikes and wash everything by hand and reassemble it under the awning.
We fine tune each Race & TT bicycle along with preparing extra wheel sets in case of emergency.
Bicycle Bob gives each bike the quality-tune approval before it is stored away.
Our bicycles need to be meticulous so that our riders can feel completely confident.
If there is any adjustments needed we are informed right away.

Children's Downtown Criterium Race

Throughout the whole entire race I was itching to jump on a bike.
I wanted to climb Pinos Altos and Descend at 50mph.
After watching the peloton fly holding an average speed of 25-30mph from the passenger seat.
I wanted to experience it for myself and explore the town.
I was not the only one craving a ride. Bicycle Bob got his kit out and off we rolled out together.

The morning of the time trials was below zero. I could not feel my fingers and toes.
I was very impressed and shocked to know the conditions in which these riders have to compete in.
The wind chill factor felt razor sharp and these riders were basically naked.
Yep, Luckily once your pedaling and hauling ass your body works up heat.

The local city newspaper had writers interviewing teams and spectators.
I was stoked to be interviewed.
Thank you Silver City for taking interest in my duties.

I will never forget this tour. I could not have dreamed of such a journey. The people I meet were all individually special and all the things that I learned made me a better mechanic. The experience was incredibly rewarding. Optum Pro Cycling is an up and coming pro team with a prosperous future ahead. I hope you enjoyed the pictures too.
